2011 Wow Award Winner
As a large school division with small budgets, Pembina’s IT department is always looking to save money and improve services. A dollar less spent by IT is a dollar more available for teachers and classrooms. Pembina recently installed an Enterprise Wireless service that provides, every school within their division access to robust, high-performing WiFi running over a fibre backbone.
In any given 24-hour period, Pembina provides access to about 2,000 individual devices, averaging about 500 devices online at a time. They have 2 controllers managing 285 access points from a central location. From IT's point of view, the service is rock-solid and easy to administer. Pembina route all Internet access through our content filters to ensure a safe browsing environment.
What does Enterprise Wireless let Pembina do? Some recent examples include the following:
- Students used iPads, GarageBand, and the Internet to mix original and downloaded music clips into powerful multimedia presentations.
- Teachers use Prezi.com and PollsAnywhere.com to create powerful, interactive lessons based on real-time student feedback. The combination replaces expensive proprietary audience response hardware with standard web technology. The interactive sessions increase student engagement and enhance learning.
- The entire school is transformed into a Learning Commons. Students armed with netbooks can gather anywhere to conduct research, do their homework, or interact online. This lets learning take place anywhere --- in the library, the gym, study carrels, the hallway, and even outside into the courtyard.
- With schools acting as WiFi hotspots, members of the general public can access the Internet. This is a real advantage in some of our disadvantaged neighbourhoods where families may not be able to afford Internet access.
Pembina Trails(MB) invested in a robust Fibre network while everyone else was cutting costs. Today, they have so much bandwidth, they provide free public internet to disadvantaged neighbourhoods. And while many others are combating infrastructure problems, Pembina is busy preparing for the future.
